Battery: the new Regulation

The recent introduction of the new European Regulation called “EU Battery Regulation”, in addition to attracting the attention of key sectors and aware consumers, marks a very important step towards a circular economy and the reduction of environmental impact.

Starting from June 2023, and gradually over the next ten years, this European Regulation will replace the Directive 2006/66/EC and it will be implemented in all member Countries of the European Union. With this regulation, emphasis is placed, in particular, on environmental sustainability, defining, for the first time, rigorous standards about all the lithium battery cycle, from production to labelling, up to use and recycling.

The “European Battery Regulation” paves the way for a future in which batteries will no longer be just a simple source of energy, but a key element of a circular economy. Technological progress and collaboration between sectors will lead to increasingly sustainable and cutting-edge solutions.

Among the new features introduced, each battery must be equipped with a BMS (Battery Management System), a system that controls the balance of the battery pack; it estimates the state of charge (SOC) and the state of health (SOH) starting from the voltage and current values of the battery; and it detects any malfunctions of the battery. Furthermore, lithium batteries will be divided into distinct groups based on their application, such as: portable batteries, batteries for automotive application, batteries for electric vehicles or batteries for industrial application.

The new legislation certainly represents an important step towards an increasingly sustainable and green-conscious society. Both industry and consumers are therefore called upon to adapt to this change, contributing to a future in which innovation and environmental responsibility blend harmoniously.
